The redevelopment of the Appleton Mills is the first phase of the revitalization of the Hamilton Canal district in downtown Lowell. This new development will provide a range of unit sizes and layouts where artists and their families can live and pursue their craft.
ARTIST PREFERENCE
Artist Preferences will be awarded by the Appleton Mills Artist Selection Board.
The Artist Selection Board consists of a panel of owners, management and local artists nominated by The City of Lowell.
The Artist Selection Board will provide interviews by appointment.
The interview process is not a judge of artwork. Instead, it will allow local artists the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to provide consistent participation or a commitment to a creative pursuit.
Qualifying artists will receive Certification of Artist Preference in writing.
Receipt of an Artist Preference Award will not guarantee housing within Appleton Mills. Applicants must also meet appropriate credit, income and background screening criteria.
Welcoming residents for move-in Spring 2011.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. As an artist my income fluctuates from year to year. After I have lived at Appleton Mills for one year, what will happen if I have earned more or less than the income guidelines?
A.The income limit is verified only at time of move-in/initial approval. Annually we will review incomes to determine if they are over 140% of area median. If they are under- we do nothing about it. Artists who can continue to pay the rent can continue to live at the property. If ones income goes over 140% of the current income limit at renewal, then management must rent the next available unit of equal or smaller size to an eligible household the current resident does not have to move or otherwise be displaced.
Q. Will my rent increase as my income increases?
A. The maximum allowable rent is a function of Area Median Income Limits, published annually by HUD. Your rent is not a function of your household income.
